Panic attacks or anxiety attacks are episodes of symptoms of anxiety that are usually short in duration, though for some can last up to half an hour, intense, and are very unpleasant.
They happen for a few different reasons and in a few different scenarios.
Panic attacks can happen:
1. As a once off episode. This is triggered by an unusual stress that you usually have not encountered before, such as having to do speak in public, doing an exam, or even going on a plane flight.
2. During a prolonged period of time when you're stressed. You have an attack of anxiety with or without a distinct trigger just before it.
3. In people who are anxious, but not severe enough to be classified as an "anxiety disorder". You may feel mainly anxiety, but you may get panic attacks as well.
4. As a part of an anxiety disorder, such as panic disorder (where you have mainly panic attacks) or generalised anxiety disorder. (where you are anxious most or all the time).
An anxiety disorder is where you experience anxiety to the point where it affects your ability to function in life.
